Cabarrus <br />Soil & Water Conservation <br />District <br />SOIL &WATER <br />CONSERVATION <br />MINUTES <br />Tuesday, May 6, 1997 <br />Supervisors Present <br />Frank Herrin <br />Myra Morrison <br />Ned Hudson <br />745 Cabarrus Avenue West <br />Concord, North Carolina 28027 <br />Phone: 704 - 788 -2105 <br />Fax: 704 - 795 -6432 <br />Others Present <br />Richard Taylor <br />Matthew Kinane <br />Dennis Testerman <br />Helen Barnes <br />The meeting was held at the County Agriculture Center at 745 Cabarrus Avenue West, Concord, <br />NC. <br />1. Frank Herrin, Chairperson, called the meeting to order. He welcomed Michele Sailer and <br />her parents to the meeting. Michele won first place in the state third grade poster <br />competition. Frank Herrin Chairperson presented her with a certificate. <br />2. The minutes from the April 1, 1997 Board meetings were reviewed. <br />MOTION: THAT THE MINUTES FROM THE APRIL 1, 1997 BOARD MEETINGS BE APPROVED. <br />M/MORRISON, S /HUDSON, C. <br />3. NRCS /FSA report - Matt Kinane, DC <br />3.1 Technical assistance given: <br />51 contacts made during this period. <br />25 - Farms were contacted during the month <br />26 - Non - agricultural <br />26 - Walk -ins were assisted. <br />4. INFORMATION /EDUCATION - Dennis Testerman <br />4.1 Michele Sailer, Cresthaven Academy Home School, won first place in the state <br />poster contest for the third grade. <br />4.2 The chairwoman of the county commissioners and the mayors of the county's <br />municipalities all declared April 26 -May 4 as Soil & Water Stewardship Week. Over <br />3600 litanies were distributed to 18 churches. Packets were also provided to <br />churches and to all public and private schools. Bookmarks were distributed to all <br />local government employees and public libraries. The county paycheck carried a <br />stewardship message on May 2. <br />4.3 National Wildlife Week packets were distributed to all public and private <br />elementary and middle schools, and to the public libraries. <br />4.4 A team of four students from Central Cabarrus High School and their advisor <br />traveled to the state Envirothon on April 18. Dennis Testerman provided staff <br />assistance at the event. <br />4.5 The nomination of the E. D. & V. B. Mesimer Dairy has been submitted to Area 8. <br />Judging will take place in late May. <br />4.6 Conversations with the Concord Wal Mart manager about support for environmental <br />education are continuing. Frank Herrin said he would talk to John Edminsten <br />relative to process to follow to approach Phillip Morris for a contribution. <br />
