He stated Pickleball, which the <br /> County is hosting, is the single fastest, largest growing sport for older <br /> persons in the United States. He then recognized the following medal winners: <br /> Jerry Owen, Shirley Brewer, Ellie Poirier, Linda Kimble, Mickey Payne, Cathy <br /> Barry, Earline Ward, Janet Buck, Elizabeth Bennett, Walt Jakubek, Jennifer <br /> Skinner, Pat Martin, Mary Watts, Becky Thompson, Nettie Wills, Marvin Martin, <br /> Virginia Martin, Tom Spindanger, Ron Flanders, Chuck Dilullo and Fran Claiborne. <br /> (C-2) Active Living and Parks - Recognition of Older Americans Month <br /> Celebration Award <br /> Linda Miller, Centralina Council of Governments, Agency of Aging, Director <br /> announced the Active Living and Parks Department was selected for the $500 first <br /> place prize by the Centralina Area Agency on Aging for the month-long <br /> celebration of Older Americans Month with the theme, "Age Out Loud." <br /> Katie Kutcher, Centralina Council of Governments, Agency of Aging, Aging <br /> Specialist announced approximately 125 seniors participated and/or volunteered <br /> in the events including: paddleboat races, art contests, chair volleyball, <br /> homemade ice cream churn off, scavenger hunt, water wars, human foosball and <br /> human pool. <br /> (C-3) Active Living and Parks - North Carolina Senior Games State Finals <br /> Pickleball Week Proclamation <br /> Chairman Morris read the proclamation aloud. <br /> UPON MOTION by Vice Chairman Honeycutt seconded by Commissioner Shue and <br /> unanimously carried, the Board adopted the North Carolina Senior Games State <br /> Finals Pickleball Week Proclamation. <br /> Proclamation No. 2017-12 <br /> PROCLAMATION <br /> NC SENIOR GAMES STATE FINALS PICKLEBALL WEEK <br /> October 17-19, 2017 <br /> WHEREAS, Cabarrus County Active Living and Parks recognizes that the North <br /> Carolina Senior Games is an important health promotion program; and <br /> WHEREAS, Cabarrus County Active Living and Parks is committed to supporting the <br /> benefits of hosting this important statewide tournament to Cabarrus <br /> County and surrounding area; and <br /> WHEREAS, Cabarrus County Active Living and Parks values the physical, social <br /> and volunteer benefits of the Senior Games; and <br /> WHEREAS, Cabarrus County Active Living and Parks continues to promote volunteer, <br /> community, and civic service; and <br /> WHEREAS, Cabarrus County Active Living and Parks appreciates the value of <br /> inclusion and support in helping older adults successfully contribute <br /> to and benefit from their communities; and <br /> WHEREAS, Senior Games can provide opportunities to enrich the lives of <br /> individuals of all ages by; <br /> • Promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and social <br /> involvement <br /> • Ensuring community members can benefit from the contributions <br /> and experience of older adults <br /> • Providing opportunities for volunteerism to persons <br /> throughout the area <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br /> do hereby proclaim October 17-19, 2017 as North Carolina Senior Games State <br /> Finals Pickleball Week in Cabarrus County. <br /> ADOPTED this 16th day of October 2017. <br /> /s/ Stephen M.
