<br />Cabarrus County Parks Commission <br /> <br />Minutes – August 19, 2010 <br /> <br />The Cabarrus County Parks Commission met on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the <br />Cabarrus County Governmental Center, 65 Church Street, Multipurpose Room. <br /> <br />Roll Call <br />The meeting was called to order by Chairman Jim Guess and silent roll call was taken. <br /> <br />Approval of Minutes <br />Chairman Jim Guess entertained a motion to accept the minutes from the June 17, 2010 <br />meeting (July 15, 2010 meeting was cancelled). A motion was made by Andrea Palo to accept <br />the minutes as presented. The motion was seconded by Margaret Houston and the motion <br />carried unanimously. <br /> <br />Old Business <br />The first agenda item under Old Business was the Park Commission Goals 2011 Goals that was <br />presented to the Commission by Director Londa Strong. This agenda item was discussed in <br />previous meetings for the future goals for 2011. A motion was made by Andrea Palo to accept <br />the 2011 Goals for the Cabarrus County Park Commission. The motion was seconded by <br />Shannon Glenn and the motion carried unanimously. A request was made by Chairman to <br />place the Cabarrus County Park Commission 2011 Goals on the County website. <br /> <br />New Business <br />1. Local Foods Initiative <br />The first agenda item under new business was the Local Foods Initiative presented by Aaron <br />Newton, Local Food Systems Program Coordinator. During the next 12 months Cabarrus <br />County will undergo a Food Assessment conducted by the Center for Environmental Farming <br />Systems (CEPS) and the newly created Food Policy Council and Aaron during the course of the <br />nd <br />assessment. Monthly meetings are scheduled for the 2 Thursday of each month. The Food <br />Policy Council is made up of 21 private citizens: 5 farmers, 1 dairy farmer, 2 meat producers, 3 <br />vegetable farmers, 1 nutritionist for Cabarrus County Schools, 2 physicians and other private <br />citizens. <br /> <br />Specific Objectives: <br /> 1. Production and Supply <br /> 2. Distribution and Processing <br /> 3. Market Demand <br /> 4. Waste Recovery <br />Aaron and the Council are working with a contracted group out of Raleigh to help understand <br />base line data for our community food assessment: what we eat, where it comes from, what we <br />produce and where it is eaten, farm size, trends in farming, etc. was reported on in the first <br />meeting of the Food Council. Next step is processing this data. <br /> <br />
