BILINGUAL LIBRARY ASSISTANT - 5003 <br />General Definition of Work: <br />Performs intermediate paraprofessional work providing assistance to library patrons. Develops, presents and evaluates <br />programming that focus on the library's Spanish - speaking audience. Focuses on educational outreach and providing <br />library services in Spanish. Work is performed under the supervision of the Literacy Services Coordinator. <br />Essential Functions/Typical Tasks: <br />Developing bilingual library programs, providing customer service and translation assistance in circulation, <br />reference, or children's services departments; assisting patrons in use of library resources; representing the <br />library at community events, maintaining records and files. <br />(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the <br />position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals <br />with disabilities to perform the essential functions) <br />• Acts as a liaison between the library and local Spanish - speaking population. <br />• Writes, performs and assesses bilingual library programs for children and their families, teens, and /or adults. <br />• Provides specialized assistance and translation services at circulation, reference, and children's services <br />departments. <br />• Presents classes and programs in Spanish. <br />• Participates in outreach, marketing, and off -site services. <br />• Assists the Literacy Coordinator with the training of library staff and volunteers. <br />• Researches and recommends materials for the library's Spanish language collections. <br />• Attends literacy program fundraising events. <br />• Collaborates with the local Latina/o community to foster relationships and promote library services. <br />• Tracks and reports relevant statistics and data. <br />• Attends meetings as required or assigned. <br />• Performs related tasks as required. <br />Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: <br />Fluency in Spanish required. Knowledge of a variety of Latin cultures. Strong writing skills with the ability to research <br />and prepare written documents. Quality oral communication and experience in presenting/performing material to vaned <br />audiences. General knowledge of basic library procedures, methods and techniques; general knowledge of and interest <br />in books including reader interest levels; general knowledge of office procedures and records maintenance techniques; <br />ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; familiar with computers and related technology and resources; <br />ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders, library patrons and associates. <br />Education and Experience: <br />Fluency in both Spanish and English. Requires graduation from an appropriately accredited community college with <br />major course work in education, Spanish, history, literature or related field; some work experience involving public <br />contact. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. <br />Physical Requirements: <br />This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force <br />frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, <br />crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal <br />communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to <br />perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or <br />computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and /or small parts, operation of machines, determining the <br />accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to <br />adverse environmental conditions. <br />Special Requirements: <br />May require possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the state of North Carolina.
