CENTRALINA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION <br /> Q&A <br /> Q.What is the Centralina Economic Development Commission? <br /> A. The Centralina Economic Development Commission(CEDC)was established in 2005,and is a public <br /> non-profit organization serving as the governing board for the nine-county Centralina Region Economic <br /> Development District. As a designated Economic Development District(EDD)by the U.S.Department <br /> of Commerce's Economic Development Administration(EDA),the CEDC develops a Comprehensive <br /> Economic Development Strategy(CEDS)for the nine-county region.Through its development and <br /> adoption by the region's local governments and the CEDC Board of Directors,and approval by the EDA <br /> Atlanta office,the CEDS not only provides an organized and structured plan for economic development <br /> of the region. It also makes the region's local governments eligible for EDA capital improvement and <br /> infrastructure funds that help create,retain,and expand job opportunities for the citizens in the region. <br /> The Centralina Council of Governments provides administrative and operational staff support for the <br /> CEDC. Their work is directed by the CEDC's Board of Directors,which is composed of representatives <br /> from local governments,businesses,economic development organizations, chambers of commerce,post- <br /> secondary institutions,workforce boards, and minority interests. The Board of Directors meets quarterly. <br /> Q.What is the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy(CEDS)? <br /> A. A CEDS is the five-year economic development plan for our nine-county Greater Charlotte region. <br /> Our region's initial Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy was developed and adopted in 2004, <br /> with an update completed every five-years. The CEDS outlines an approach to regional growth and <br /> prosperity that builds on the region's strengths,emphasizes key regional industry clusters,and prioritizes <br /> economic development projects. A 2012 update of the CEDS was completed in December 2012 titled <br /> "Prosperity for Greater Charlotte"and can be found at www.ProsperityForGreaterCharlotte.com. <br /> Q.What is an Economic Development District(EDD)? <br /> A. An EDD,or District Organization,is a federally designated organization charged with the <br /> development,maintenance and implementation of the CEDS plan.Application for designation involves <br /> several steps including written support by the State of North Carolina,Anson,Cabarrus,Gaston,Lincoln, <br /> Mecklenburg,Rowan, Stanly and Union Counties,and a plan of operation as a non-profit organization. <br /> Once designated,the EDD is eligible for a 50%matching planning grant to fund the program and staff,to <br /> administer the region's CEDS. <br /> The District's primary functions are to coordinate the economic development activities of the planning <br /> region,provide technical assistance to economic development organizations of the region,and maintain <br /> the region's eligibility to apply for economic development grants and assistance from the Economic <br /> Development Administration(EDA). <br /> Q.What counties make up the nine-county Centralina EDD region? <br /> A.
