Little Free Library —
Take a Book, Leave a Book
This year, Cabarrus County Active Living and Parks added Little
Free Libraries stocked with donated books by the local library to
our facility locations. Alex Beck, parks program supervisor, made
them a reality after reading about the program online. Anyone in
the public has access to the books, which are stored in creative and
unlocked depositories. People who take a book can keep it, return it
or donate additional books to the collection. The first one opened in
Frank Liske Park and was soon followed with locations at at Camp
T.N. Spencer Park, Vietnam Veterans Park and the Cabarrus County
Senior Center in Concord. The public has provided very positive
feedback and describe it as a cool way to bring books to people
where they don't expect them.
Cabarrus Seniors Discover
Healthy Habits at Health
and Wellness Day
In March, the Cabarrus Arena opened its doors to area older adults on
Senior Health and Wellness Day (SHWD). The annual event, hosted by
Cabarrus County Active Living and Parks, provides the public access
to free health and wellness resources, activities and screenings. "To get
seniors out, not only benefits their health, it's a way to be social, get
active and have a lot of fun," said Makenzie Mullinax, wellness coordi-
nator with Cabarrus County. Wanda Whitley of Mt. Pleasant tried a few
of the center -stage exercise classes. "I started with line dancing and then
jumped in with belly dancing and the Hoop and Holler demonstration,"
said Whitley. "Today was a good time to learn what's available to stay
healthy." Whitley also scheduled an onsite mammogram. It was the first
time she had scheduled one at the event. "It was great. I just received
a notice from my doctor it was time for one, so I got one here." Like
Whitley, attendees were able to participate in wellness examinations
from Carolinas HealthCare System and other local providers.
Let the Good Times Roll
Log rolling classes made a big splash in Cabarrus County this summer.
The Active Living and Parks Department offered log rolling classes at
the Camp T.N. Spencer Park pool. Classes centered on fundamentals,
including footwork and posture, using an imitation log that mimics
the movement of a real one. Log rolling is quickly becoming a fitness
craze, as it promotes balance, leg and core strength, cardiovascular
endurance and overall functional coordination.
AJty^ #,h4
1 -1 Page 390
