Section 1 <br />■ The Aberdeen Carolina and Western Railroad operates the east -west rail line through the <br />southern corner of Cabarrus County, passing through the community of Midland. This line <br />carries short-haul freight traffic. <br />■ CSX operates the rail line that runs through the northeast corner of Cabarrus County. This <br />line carries freight traffic along the Highway 52 corridor. <br />Gas pipelines: <br />■ Two large and two smaller pipelines run through Cabarrus County. The Plantation Pipeline <br />Company and the Colonial Pipeline Company both have lines that carry hydrocarbons <br />through the northwest section of Cabarrus County. <br />o The Plantation pipeline runs under the northern end of Coddle Creek Reservoir (section <br />north of Mooresville Road). <br />o North Carolina Natural Gas has a pipeline that runs southeast from the Plantation pipeline <br />generally along the Mecklenburg- Cabarrus County boundary line to Harrisburg. This line <br />then traverses the southern side of Cabarrus County, passing north of Midland and exiting <br />into Stanly County. <br />o Republic Natural Gas has a spur line off the Colonial pipeline running northwest out of <br />Cabarrus County. <br />Water distribution: <br />■ Local municipalities obtain their water supplies locally, which is then treated and distributed <br />to residents. <br />• The City of Concord receives raw water from the Lake Don T. Howell and Lake Fisher. <br />• The City of Kannapolis receives raw water from the Lake Don T. Howell and pumps this <br />into the main water supply at Kannapolis Lake. <br />• The Town of Mt. Pleasant receives raw water from the Black Creek Run Reservoir. <br />• The Town of Harrisburg purchases water from the Cities of Concord and Charlotte. <br />• The residents of the Town of Midland either purchase water from the City of Concord or <br />utilize wells. <br />Aviation: <br />■ The Concord Regional Airport, a general aviation facility, is located on Aviation Boulevard <br />in the western section of Cabarrus County. It is immediately west and parallel to 1 -85. The <br />facility has two runways, one 7400 feet and the other 7000 feet long. <br />■ There are also several small private airfields in Cabarrus County. <br />Potential/Regional Cascading Threats: <br />■ Charlotte Motor Speedway and Drag Strip <br />o During events at the Speedway, the area can become home to over 120,000 people for <br />upwards of two weeks (May race weeks).
