R
KANNAPOLIS
July 17, 2014
Elizabeth "Liz" Poole, Chair
Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners
65 Church Street, SE
Concord, NC 28025
Dear Liz,
I am following up with you regarding the renaming of the North Cabarrus Park. Last
week, City Manager Mike Legg and I met with County staff, John Stanley and other
members of the Cabarrus Veterans Coalition regarding this matter.
We had a good dialogue on the reasons why they would like to see the park renamed.
We also explained our significant investment in Veterans Park and that the names of
Vietnam War Veterans are included in the Ring of Honor at the park. We also spoke
about our work with the American Legion and VFW as well as other veterans to ensure
that we were honoring all military men and women equally in one location in Kannapolis
and Cabarrus County. We spoke about the confusion of having two parks with similar
names in the same City.
We offered numerous alternatives in order to honor Vietnam veterans such as having a
specific memorial in Veterans Park in their honor, naming another suitable park with
less potential for confusion, naming a street or other location in the City, and so forth.
We offered to construct a memorial in their honor at North Cabarrus Park in lieu of the
renaming.
None of our offers were palatable to them.
Thus, we have reached an impasse with our efforts to finding a compromise to the
renaming of the park. At this point it would appear that it is up to the Board of
Commissioners to decide whether or not to rename North Cabarrus Park.
I would like to reiterate that we fully support honoring our veterans as evidenced by the
$3 million spent to renovate and expand the Veterans Park. We also have a vested
interest in North Cabarrus Park as we contributed significant land and money to this
amenity. We still hope that the Board of Commissioners will be able to reach a
compromise that still honors the service and sacrifice of the Vietnam War veterans.
G -3 Page 279
