What is the purpose of the project? <br />(2uu words or less. <br />The purpose of this project is to place a permanent agricultural conservation easement on the land. The <br />Porter family does not intend for the land to be developed. They wish to acquire additional land with the <br />easement money to make the farming operation more sustainable. Plans are to use NCADFPTF and <br />UDSA FRPP matching funds to establish a permanent agricultural conservation easement on 182.49 <br />acres for the $228,112.50 grant award. <br />2. What community need(s) will the project serve? <br />uu words or less, <br />The primary community needs addressed by protection of a portion of this farm with a permanent <br />agricultural conservation easement include food commodity production, employment opportunities, <br />support of the local and regional agribusiness economy and environmental services. <br />3. If so, how is this project different/why is this project necessary? <br />(:zuu words or less.) <br />Farmland protection through permanent agricultural conservation easements is foundational to <br />sustainable agriculture in Cabarrus County. Farmland preservation on the urban /suburban fringe areas <br />like Mt. Pleasant is essential for local food systems in these areas. Cabarrus SWCD and the LTCNC <br />recently signed a memorandum of agreement believed to be the first of its kind in the country.
