CABARRUS COUNTY <br />* <br />REGULAR <br />1 <br />�A CA1Lp 1�1�I <br />N OVEMBER <br />• P .M. <br />AGENDA CATEGORY: <br />Recognitions and Presentations <br />SUBJECT: <br />Proclamation - Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month 2014 <br />BRIEF SUMMARY: <br />The Board of Commissioners have been requested to adopt a Pancreactic <br />Cancer Awareness Month Proclamation in order to bring attention to this <br />cancer, the people it affects and the need for funding its cure. <br />Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer - related death in <br />the United States, and the only major cancer with a five -year relative <br />survival rate in the single digits (six percent). The incidence and death <br />rates for pancreatic cancer are increasing, and it is anticipated to move <br />from the fourth to the second leading cause of cancer - related death in the <br />U.S. by 2020. <br />It is estimated that 39,590 Americans will die of pancreatic cancer in 2014, <br />approximately 1,190 of whom live in North Carolina. In 2014, pancreatic <br />cancer will afflict more than 46,420 Americans, 73 percent of whom will <br />die within one year of their diagnosis, and 94 percent of whom will die <br />within five years of diagnosis. <br />REQUESTED ACTION: <br />Motion to adopt proclamation. <br />EXPECTED LENGTH OF PRESENTATION: <br />1 Minute <br />SUBMITTED BY: <br />Elizabeth F.
