Cabarrus County Public Library 2
The first type of class will be for adults who want to learn computer skills Classes will include basic computer
skills, use of the PAC, Microsoft Office applications, NC LIVE databases, job searching skills, resume writing (using
Cypress Resume), genealogy skills (using Heritage Quest, Ancestry and Fold 3) and demonstrations on other
databases to which the library subscribes. The grant funded staff person will develop lesson plans for each type
of class and will in turn teach library staff in all four libraries how to teach the classes. This will help ensure
consistency in the way that information is presented and taught throughout the library system.
The second type of class will be for adults who want to learn technology skills Classes will include instruction on
the use of cell /smart phones, eReaders and other related devices. Again, the grant funded staff person will
develop lesson plans for each type of class and will in turn teach library staff in all four libraries how to teach the
classes to ensure consistency across the library system.
The third type of class will be for adults served by the Cabarrus Literacy Council in the Adult Basic Literacy
program. The classes will include basic computer skills and literacy related classes using software geared toward
low level adult readers and new adult readers. The software will be a combination of software acquired by the
Literacy Council and free resources available on the Internet. A standard lesson plan will be developed so that
the Literacy Coordinator or literacy volunteers can teach students or train other volunteers.
The fourth type of class will be for volunteer tutors from the Cabarrus Literacy Council These classes will teach
the volunteer tutors how to use computers and technology when tutoring their students. A standard lesson
plan will be developed.
Equipment to be purchased includes two Smart Boards — one for the Kannapolis Library and the other for the Mt
Pleasant Library. Other grant funding has been awarded recently to acquire a mobile laptop lab of 10 computers
and Smart Boards of the other two libraries.
3. PROJECT PARTNERS, if applicable (others respond with N /A)
Cabarrus Literacy Council.
The Cabarrus Literacy Council office is in the main library of the Cabarrus County Public Library system. The
library administers their program, although it is fully funded by the Literacy Council. Library Director Dana Eure
is a nonvoting member on that Board.
The Board of Directors of the Cabarrus Literacy Council has stated that computer literacy for their students is a
priority to help insure that they can remain in or reenter the workforce. The Literacy Council has partnered with
a local church, a YMCA and several schools in order to provide computer lab space for their students and tutors
to use. At this point, however, there is very little instruction provided to tutors on the best ways to use the
computers to improve their students' basic literacy and computer literacy.
The Literacy Coordinator, Susan Suarez Webster, will work with grant staff to develop goals for the classes
offered for students and tutors. She will coordinate the training and be trained by the grant staff so that she can
train future tutors and students.
Since the Literacy Council and the library share space it is natural for them to share other resources. The library
benefits from the partnership because it introduces the library to those who may not be traditional users and
becomes a safe place for them to frequent. The Literacy Council in turn gets many referrals for both students
and volunteers through the library.
Both the library and the Literacy Council are active partners in this project.
Attarhmant nnmh 1
Literacy & Lifelong Learning Project Grant, 2013 -2014 page 2 of 7
F -9 Page 111
