Cabarrus County Youth Council
2012 -2013 Report to the
Board of Commissioners
February 18 2013
Seth Bollenbecker, President
Cabarrus County Youth Council
The Cabarrus County Youth Council started out the year with a brand new advisor. On
the leadership team this year I am serving as President, Ryan Himes as Vice - President,
Casey Aldridge as Secretary, and Harrison Reef as Historian. An initial re- organization of
committees and bylaw revision was completed in order to clear up a few loose ends under
the new leadership.
The council currently has thirteen members and three new members are being
recommended this evening bringing us to a total of sixteen. Hickory Ridge and Northwest
Cabarrus High Schools both have a single position open on the council. There are now
only three committees, the Recruitment and Application Committee, Communications
Committee, and Education Committee.
Early in the year, in order to learn more about local government's assistance to the small
businesses in our county, the council visited the Incubator Beginner Farming Program at
the Lomax facility. We also toured Clearwater Studios art gallery and were educated
about Concord's efforts to grow the creative economy.
Obtaining the State of North Carolina Youth Council Charter has been one of the
council's main objectives for this year. Several Council members will be attending the
Youth Legislative Assembly in March and possibly the Annual Meeting in May. Once all
attendances are completed, the council will be able to submit an application and ask for
approval at the Annual Conference in Raleigh this May.
Currently, the council is working with community organizations to promote better
nutrition and availability of choices in school meals as a response to a major issue the
council identified at our retreat. Several members attended part of the Food Policy
Council's retreat on February 2nd to coordinate our efforts in regards to nutrition in school
meals.
Another main issue we have decided to focus on is the apathy towards education amongst
middle and high school students. The Youth Council is actively assessing existing mentor
Attachment number 1
C -1 Page 61
