Although GDP figures are not available at the county
level, data reported for the Charlotte MSA is considered meaningful when compared to the nation
overall, as Cabarrus County is part of the MSA and subject to its influence.
Economic growth, as measured by annual changes in GDP, has been considerably higher in the
Charlotte MSA than the United States overall during the past eight years. The Charlotte MSA has
grown at a 2.0% average annual rate while the United States has grown at a 1.0% rate. As the national
economy recovers from the downturn of 2008 -2009, the Charlotte MSA continues to perform better
than the United States. GDP for the Charlotte MSA rose by 2.4% in 2011 while the United States GDP
rose by 1.5 %.
The Charlotte MSA has a per capita GDP of $57,735, which is 37% greater than the United States GDP
of $42,070. This means that Charlotte MSA industries and employers are adding relatively more value
to the economy than their counterparts in the United States overall.
The Glenn Center
® rr
H -5 Page 341
