CABARRUS COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />REGULAR MEETING <br />DECEMBER 16, 2013 <br />6:30 P.M. <br />AGENDA CATEGORY: <br />Recognitions and Presentations <br />SUBJECT: <br />Active Living and Parks - Recognition of Lenora Barron on Receipt of <br />NCRPA Award <br />BRIEF SUMMARY: <br />The North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association ( NCRPA) <br />recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in <br />enhancing the quality of life. These awards are presented annually at the <br />state conference. <br />The Active Living and Parks Department submitted an application <br />nominating Lenora Barron for the Special Citation Award. Mrs. Barron is a <br />Physical Education Teacher at Weddington Hills Elementary School. She <br />has been the driving force behind improvements made to the school park <br />including: pavement of the walking track, installation of a shelter, age - <br />appropriate playground equipment, development of a nature trail, <br />pavement of the trail, composting, gardening, plant identification and re- <br />introduction of native plants to the campus. <br />Through the Active Living and Parks Department Matching Incentive <br />Grant Program $42,275.00 has been awarded to Weddington Hills <br />Elementary School to assist in the improvements ($90,550.00 total cost). <br />Mrs. Barron has received additional grant funds from various other <br />organizations to continue to improve the campus. <br />The Special Citation Award is presented annually to an individual who has <br />demonstrated an outstanding interest in and dedication to the field of <br />C -2 Page 27 <br />
