In last 12 years, Special Olympics Cabarrus County has steadily increased the <br />number of registered athletes (from 500 to 1200 athletes) <br />SOCC has tripled the number of training and competition opportunities for athletes <br />by going from 5 sports (Athletics, Aquatics, Bocce, Bowling, and Softball) to 15. <br />Increased the <br />number of athletes participating in <br />local <br />Spring Games causing the one <br />day event at a <br />local high school to become a two <br />day <br />event at the Cabarrus Arena <br />Started a Young Athletes Program in Cabarrus that began with one preschool and <br />has extended to three <br />Hosted Special Olympics NC Basketball and Cheerleading Tournament in 2005 and <br />2006 <br />Host an annual SONC 5 -on -5 and 3 -on -3 basketball series in January <br />Host an annual SONC Softball and athletics qualifier in April <br />Cabarrus soccer team won a bronze medal at National games in Iowa (2006) <br />Three athletes who are SONC Global Messengers for SONC <br />One athlete chosen to be on the SONC Athlete Council <br />Betty Lewis was chosen as state " "Volunteer of the Year" (2010) <br />Attachment number 2 <br />G -1 Page 140 <br />
