Cabarrus County Zoning Ordinance <br />Chapter 7- Performance Based Standards <br />S tagy <br />a. Female chickens are for egg production only; <br />b. The chicken house and run must be fully enclosed and the hens kept within it at all <br />times. All chicken houses must be properly maintained in a safe, clean and sanitary <br />condition that poses no health threat to the chickens or citizens and does not create <br />a public nuisance. Runs must be well drained so that there will be no accumulation <br />of moisture. <br />c. The chicken house must be used for female chickens only and must be well <br />ventilated. Houses shall be located a minimum of 25 feet from any property line. <br />Run areas must be located a minimum of 25 feet from any property line and 50 <br />from any stream. <br />d. All feed and other items associated with the keeping of chickens shall be stored <br />properly and protected from rodents; <br />e. Waste products generated from the raising of chickens shall be disposed of properly. <br />If on -site composting is performed, compost storage areas shall be located a <br />minimum of 25' from any property line and 50' from any stream. (* *See below for <br />additional composting information.) If on -site composting is not used, all chicken <br />related waste must be double bagged before being placed in on -site roll out trash <br />bins. <br />f. All structures, fencing, and hens must be located in the rear yard of the dwelling. <br />The range area provided to any chickens must not include the crawl space of any <br />residential structures. <br />g. Male chickens (roosters) are prohibited. <br />* *Compost is organic material that can be used as a soil amendment or as a medium to <br />grow plants. It is created by: combining organic wastes (e.g., yard trimmings, food wastes, <br />manures) in proper ratios into piles, rows, or vessels; adding bulking agents (e.g., wood <br />chips) as necessary to accelerate the breakdown of organic materials; and allowing the <br />finished material to fully stabilize and mature through a curing process. An auction house, which includes any percentage livestock sales, may not be <br />sited within 500' of a residential use, measurement to begin at the outermost facility <br />housing animals. Auction houses not featuring livestock sales will meet the standard <br />setbacks of the zone. <br />b.
