_C_ c
Centralina Council of Governments
June 5, 2012
The Honorable Elizabeth Poole, Chairman
Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners
Post Office Box 707
Concord, North Carolina 28026
Dear Chairman Poole,
In the fall of 2011, Centralina Council of Governments applied, on behalf of the 14-
county bi -state region, for HUD Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant funds
to undertake the next steps of the CONNECT vision. The participation of over 100
volunteer jurisdictions, organizations, and businesses in developing this application
through the CONNECT Consortium, helped us to secure funding in the amount of $4.9
million from HUD. These funds will be used to help communities address some of their
toughest issues, and to create a regional framework to ensure that the rapid growth this
region continues to experience occurs in ways that promote economic and job growth,
protect quality of life, and avoid unnecessary government spending.
We would like to share with you more information about this project, and invite
Cabarrus County to become involved in it as a member of the CONNECT Consortium,
which will guide this grant process. As a first step, a member of our Executive Board,
Mount Pleasant Mayor Pro Tern Richard Burleyson, would welcome the opportunity to
meet with your governing board to present information about the project and how you
can participate. Participation requires no financial cost other than some of your time —
but your participation will yield significant benefits to your community and the region.
Should you wish to join the Consortium, and we certainly hope you will, we can provide
a copy of the Consortium Agreement and additional information about how the
Consortium will do its work in guiding the grant process to produce the results this
region and our communities need. We are working to ensure vibrant communities in a
robust region —that is what CONNECT Our Future is all about.
525 North Tryon Street —12 Floor
Charlotte, North Carolina 28202
Phone: 704-372-2416 Fax: 704-347-4710
www.centralina.us
Equal Opportunity /Affirmative Action Employer.
