The unemployment rate in North <br />Carolina was 9.6 percent in July, <br />increasing 0.2 percentage points from <br />the previous month, and 1.1 percentage <br />points lower than July 2011. Department of Commerce, Labor and Economic Analysis Division <br />--4o--US —m--NC <br />North Carolina Total Nonfarm Employment Increased After Last Month's Decline <br />In July 2012, North Carolina's seasonally adjusted Total Nonfarm employment gained 1,800 jobs over the <br />month and 36,800 jobs over the year. The United States added 163,000 Total Nonfarm jobs over the month <br />and 1,838,000 over the year. North Carolina's Private sector gained 16,000 jobs over the month and 42,700 <br />jobs over the year. Seasonally Adjusted, nine of the 11 major North Carolina industrial sectors <br />experienced job gains over the month. Leisure & Hospitality had the largest net increase (5,900) <br />Government experienced the largest over - the -month loss (14,200), followed by Mining & Logging (100). <br />For more information on the latest Current Employment Statistics for North Carolina, see the latest edition of <br />the NC Today, which can be found here <br />July Regular Initial Claims Climbed After a Decline in June <br />Regular Initial Claims, which totaled 64,214 for the month ending July 31, 2012, increased 17,702 (38.1 %) from <br />the prior month's total of 46,512. Sales of existing homes rose in July even with constraints of affordable inventory, and the national <br />median price is showing five consecutive months of year- over -year increases, according to the National <br />Association of Realtors. Nationwide, housing authorizations in July were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of <br />812,000. This is 6.8 percent ( ±1.5 %) above the revised June rate of 760,000. Foreclosure activity was nearly <br />4 percent higher than June, but was nearly 10 percent lower than July 2009.
