Twelve Month Unemployment Rate by County (December 2009 - November 2010) <br />When seasonal fluctuations are controlled for by examining a twelve month average unemployment rate, <br />Orange County (6.3%) has the lowest rate. Aside from Orange, Currituck (6.6%), Chatham (7.2%) and Gates <br />(7.3%) are the only counties with rates below 7.5%. <br />Total non -farm employment decreased; the trade and leisure experienced the most significant job losses <br />Preliminary data suggest: <br />• Since last month (October 2010) North Carolina has lost 12,500 nonfarm payroll jobs. <br />• The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector and Leisure and Hospitality each accounted for <br />nearly 28% of the gross job loss. <br />• Education and Health Services made up 75% of gross job gains. <br />• Over the past twelve months the state has lost 6,100 nonfarm payroll jobs. <br />o The Professional and Business Services, Education and Health Services, and Information <br />sectors are the only groups to post job gains over the last twelve months. <br />• Since the start of the recession the state has lost 281,800 non -farm jobs. <br />o The Construction Sector has lost more than 81,000 jobs since the start of the recession.
