Special Request for Additional Funding for Extension of Raging Ridge Road to
Stallings Road in Harrisburg, NC
Dear Senator Berger and Representative Tillis,
It is our understanding that the Senate and the House of Representatives have the ability to
provide special state funds to assist in the construction of road improvement projects which they
deem worthy. Our school system would like to request that the Senate allocate a minimum of
$250,000 to a project to extend an access road that serves two schools in our district so that a
safety hazard caused by limited access to the schools can be eliminated
As our school district has grown in student population and the need for new schools required
the construction of facilities in the Town of Harrisburg, NC, Cabarrus County Schools funded
construction of both a high school and a middle school along Raging Ridge Road. Hickory
Ridge High School was opened in 2007 and access to it via Raging Ridge Road from Hickory
Ridge Road worked reasonably well.
With the opening of the new Hickory Ridge Middle School in August 2010, it became obvious
that even with a traffic signal at the intersection of Hickory Ridge and Raging Ridge Roads,
during heavy traffic periods for special events like athletic games, a single direction of ingress
and egress to these schools will not work well over time
More troubling issues are the conditions where evacuation of one or both schools would have to
take place, or emergency vehicles must gain access to one of the schools. In these
circumstances the current single point of ingress and egress from the area of the schools could
become a much more serious issue. Not only will the road extension help serve the schools but
it would also facilitate access of emergency vehicles to the community beyond the schools that
would have improved service to their homes and businesses.
G -6
Attachment number 2
Page 225
