Draft 1.1 -- Not for Distribution or Circulation
It's possible to determine the percentage of businesses in each NAICS sector that is
locally owned using Dunn & Bradstreet data. While acquiring this database is an
expense beyond the budget of this study, an estimate is possible by looking at recently
published data for 2 -digit NAICS industries for North Carolina from the Edward Lowe
Foundation (available in www.youreconomy.org). We estimate, in Chart 7 below, that
13,644 of the total private workforce of 74,031 — or 18% -- of the workforce is employed
by nonresident companies.
Chart 7
Employees for Local vs. Nonlocal Business (Private Sector)
Employees for
NAICS Code NAICS code description Workforce %Nonresident Nonresident Firms
11 - --
Forestry, fishing, hunting, and Agriculture Support
469
9.20%
43
21 - --
Mining and oil and gas extraction
63
54.20%
34
22 - --
Utilities
37
7.30%
3
23 - --
Construction
7,131
0.00%
0
31 - --
Manufacturing
6,523
45.80%
2,988
42 - --
Wholesale trade
2,9131
29.00%
845
44 - --
lRetail trade
13,567
31.80%
4,314
48 - --
Transportation and warehousing
1,566
24.60%
385
51 - --
Information
719
41.90%
301
52 - --
Finance and insurance
1,571
26.90%
423
53 - --
Real estate and rental and leasing
4,324
11.30%
489
54 - --
Professional, scientific, and technical services
3,495
16.80%
587
55 - --
Management of companies and enterprises
994
1.10%
11
56 - --
Administrative and Support and Waste Mang and
5,034
10.40%
524
61 - --
Educational services
1,165
0.00%
0
62 - --
Health care and social assistance
5,405
7.90%
427
71 - --
Arts, entertainment, and recreation
5,525
5.60%
309
72 - --
Accommodation and food services
7,659
22.70%
1,739
81 - --
Other services (except public administration
5,8711
3.80%
223
99 - --
Industries not classified
I
1 0
Total for all sectors 74,031 13,644
Put another way, 82% of the private workforce is employed by locally owned business.
If we added public sector jobs and deem state and local (but not federal) employees
"local," about 83% of all workers five in six -- are employed by local businesses or
institutions. It suggests that any economic - development policy that focused on one in six
employees who is nonlocal may not be wisely directed.
z The data are derived from Dun & Bradstreet, which compiles data on every business operating in the state,
including their sectors of activities, sales, jobs, and headquarters location.
11
Attachment number 1
1 -4 Page 313
