Organizational Description
The mission of the Cabarrus County Public Library is to strive to provide for the cultural, educational and recreational
needs of all citizens of Cabarrus County by providing equal access to a variety of books, materials, programs and
other resources and information that meet and exemplify the diverse needs of those we serve. We will provide a
customer service oriented, knowledgeable and well trained staff that will promote the enjoyment of reading and
support the pursuit of lifelong learning.
There are four public library locations in Cabarrus County (Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg and Mt Pleasant). All
four library locations offer a full range of services to the citizens of Cabarrus County including books and other
materials for check out or use in the library, reference services, computer/Internet access and regular programs for
children, teens and adults. In addition, there are local history rooms in the Concord and Kannapolis Libraries and
service to homebound patrons.
Cabarrus County has a population of 168,740 with five municipalities (Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, Midland and
Mt Pleasant). The population is 81.8% white and 15.1% African American. 8.9% of the population is of Hispanic
origin. 78.2% are high school graduates and 19.1% have earned a Bachelor's degree.
Cabarrus County is adjacent to Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte. It is also the home of Lowes Motor
Speedway (NASCAR), Concord Mills Mall (the #1 tourist attraction in North Carolina), and the North Carolina
Research Campus. Technology, tourism, communications and education, manufacturing and distribution,
motorsports and life sciences industries are all prevalent in Cabarrus County.
Educational institutions in Cabarrus County include Cabarrus County Public Schools (K-12), Kannapolis City Schools
(K-12), a branch of Rowan Cabarrus Community College, Barber-Scotia College (small private Presbyterian college)
and Cabarrus College of Health Sciences (4-year institution).
The Cabarrus County Public Library has hosted two "One Book One Community" programs in 2008 and 2009. The
"One Book One Community" committee consists of library staff and members of the community.
In 2008 the program focused on the book "Walking Across Egypt" by Clyde Edgerton. The program consisted book
discussion groups, "Walking Across Egypt" the movie, a story teller for children, "Walking Across Egypt" the play, a
creative writing workshop with Edgerton, a lecture from Edgerton and a performance of his band. Total attendance
for this program was over 6,000.
In 2009 the selection was "On Agate Hill" by Lee Smith. The program consisted of book discussion groups, family
history workshops, a downtown ghost tour, UDC presentations, a bluegrass band, a re-enactor, children's
programming, a one woman show, several contests, a creative writing workshop with the author and a lecture from
Smith. Total attendance for this program was over 3,700. (The attendance was lower the second year because play
ran for eight performance the first year as opposed to the one performance of the one woman show).
Attachment number 1
F-5 Page 139
