CABARRUS COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
REGULAR MEETING
MAY 17, 2010
6:30 P.M.
AGENDA CATEGORY:
Recognitions and Presentations
SUBJECT:
Cooperative Extension -Presentation and Acceptance of the NC State
University Local Government Engagement Partnership Award
BRIEF SUMMARY:
The Office of Extension, Engagement and Economic Development at NC
State University presents the Government Partnership Award to a local
governmental entity that partners with NC State to model the mutually
beneficial relationships that are the hallmark of a truly engaged University.
Cabarrus County empowers Cooperative Extension to deliver relevant,
cutting-edge educational programs. It allocates resources for employees
to train volunteers who strengthen the community and change lives. This
partnership is particularly strong surrounding the local food movement
where Cooperative Extension has been charged with creating and
maintaining a beginning farmer program that includes acounty-owned 30
acre Incubator Farm where the infrastructure is provided for the beginning
farmers and Extension provides the oversight and training. Extension is
also involved in the construction of a slaughter facility with funding from
the NCADFP Trust Fund, a food policy council and a community food
assessment. Cabarrus County Government believes in the partnership of
NC Cooperative Extension and NC State University.
Dr. Patricia Sobrero, Associate Vice Chancellor for Extension,
Engagement, and Economic Development, NC State University and
possibly others will attend the May meeting to present the award to the
Commission.
C-1 Page 43
