GENERAL ORDER 1100 -04 <br />W. INVESTIGATION OF HAZ -MAT INCIDENTS <br />1. Police investigation of a hazardous materials incident will be assigned to the appropriate <br />component, depending on the type and severity of incident involved. Normally, the Patrol <br />Division will handle transportation incidents. Should the nature or severity of the incident <br />warrant, CID personnel may be assigned to conduct the investigation. <br />2. A police investigation is required on all hazardous materials incidents, and should be closely <br />coordinated with any concurrent investigation being conducted by the County Emergency <br />Management Director, Fire Department, National Response Center, or other agency of <br />jurisdiction. <br />3. The completion of a DMV -349 form pursuant to the investigation of traffic collisions involving <br />the release of small quantities (less than 50 gallons) of gasoline or diesel fuel from breached <br />containers will satisfy the requirements of this section. <br />X. MEDICAL ASSESSMENT OF AFFECTED PERSONNEL <br />1. All police personnel who respond to an incident scene and who suffer direct exposure to a <br />hazardous substance will be required to undergo a medical assessment to determine if any <br />treatment or follow -up care is needed. <br />2. A medical assessment will be conducted irrespective of whether or not the officer exhibits overt <br />symptoms orcomplains of physical distress or injury. The medical assessmentwill be provided <br />at no cost to the officer, and at the earliest practical time following the exposure. <br />3. The following general procedure will be followed: <br />(a) Medical assessments will be performed by the designated departmental health care <br />provider in accordance with the procedures applicable to worker's compensation <br />injuries; <br />(b) The facility where the medical assessment is to be conducted should be informed <br />(prior to the officer's arrival) of the nature of the exposure and the type of substance <br />involved, if known. Any de- contamination' or other special'procedures of the facility <br />must be communicated to and observed by the officer(s) to be examined;. <br />(c) Afield supervisor, or his designee, should accompany affected officers to the medical <br />facility for the purpose of providing detailed information to the attending medical <br />personnel, and to secure duty weapons and equipment during de- contamination and <br />examination procedures. <br />Y. PROVIDING AID TO OTHER AGENCIES <br />1.
