Cabarrus County Parks Department
IVIE~®
TO: Mike Downs, Deputy County Manager
FROM: Londa Strong, Director
DATE: August 31, 2009
SUBJECT: WW Flowe Par{c Land -west side of Central Heights Drive
Cabarrus County was the recipient of a gift of land from Mary Flowe and Harry
Brown as part of the W. W. Flowe Will. The land is on the east and west sides
of Central Heights Drive and was designated to be an active Parlc for the citizens
of Cabarrus County.
Phase I, the first gift of approximately 44 acres on the east side of Central
Heights Drive, was opened to the public in 2002 with 4 lighted ballfields, walking
frail, picnic sites, and a playground. Cabarrus County developed the park and
the City of Concord operates it.
In 2001, the County was the recipient of an additional 60 acres on the west side
of Central I-leights Drive. This parcel was deeded to the County upon the death
of Mary Flowe Brown.
Cabarrus County Parl<s Department has spoken with the Cabarrus CVB in
relation to the development of this 60 acre parcel for a competitive sports
complex. "f"here are no current plans in the Parks CIP, Budget, or the Livable
Community Blueprint referencing the County developing this parcel of land. The
Parlc Commission was briefed on the concept of CVB developing this parcel and
is in total agreement, as am I.
Cabarrus County is in desperate need of a competitive sports complex to
successfully receive State and National Tournament bids. Development of this
property would be a great beginning in securing future Tournaments.
237.3 Concord Lake Road (28025) • P.O.
