CABARRUSCOUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />PROCLAMATION <br />Whereas, pets enrich our lives in a variety of ways, from being companions to the lonely, to being <br />eyes for the blind, friends to families, and protectors of our lives, <br />Whereas, there are thousands of homes in Cabarrus County were dogs, cats, and other household <br />pets make the lives of our families richer, <br />Whereas, numerous organizations, including the Humane Society of Greater Cabarrus County, <br />Cabarrus Cares, and Cabarrus Pets Society, as well as many other independent rescue organizations make <br />sure animals that are abandoned or given up are provided the opportunity for a high quality of life through <br />adoption programs, <br />Whereas, organizations that train specialized dogs for public service to include detection of drugs <br />and bombs, as well as rescue of trapped individuals, <br />Whereas, at least 10 veterinary practices operate in Cabarrus County, employing well over one <br />hundred individuals dedicated to the prevention and treatment of illnesses and injuries to animals, <br />Whereas, proper care of our pets, to include ensuring their timely vaccinations and having them <br />spayed and neutered make them a better pet, and helps to control the overall population of stray dogs and <br />feral cats, <br />Whereas, animal cruelty is hidden crime in our country, where pets and animals are abused, either <br />by irresponsible pet owners, those with mental or emotional issues, or those just looking to have "fun", <br />Be it therefore resolved that the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners declare the month of <br />May 2008 as the first annual "Love our Pets Month" in Cabarrus County, and urge our citizens to participate <br />in activities coordinated by the county Animal Protection & Preservation Advisory Committee. These <br />activities will be organized around different themes for each week of the month of May: <br />May 5-11- SpaylNeuter Your Pet Week <br />May 12-18 -Rabies & Vaccinations Emphasis Week <br />May 19-25 -Service Dog Appreciation Week <br />May 26-31-Anti-Cruelty Prevention Week <br />Adopted this the 21 s~ day of April, 2008. <br />H.
