At a mid-point in the planning process, atwo-day <br />charrette, or design workshop, was held. This <br />collaborative workshop was organized to develop <br />feasible land use alternatives and supporting <br />development concepts in a series of focused sessions. <br />Over the two-day period, the project team worked <br />closely with county staff, the Advisory Committee <br />and cortununity members to generate a series of <br />concepts and ideas for review=and assessment. Each <br />day, more than 50 people participated in the <br />charrette. <br />With initial concepts established, the plan entered <br />the final stages of the process with the detailed reFnement of a single, preferred <br />alternative. Through this examination, the <br />existing conditions were also assessed to identify the issues and:opportunities facing the <br />central area. Among them are the following: <br />^ The area is predominantly rural in character and the ability to maintairrthat <br />chazacter is threatened by the increasing growth pressures stemming from rapid <br />urbanization of the Charlotte metropolitan area. <br />^ Many portions of the study area lack water and sewer service which is a limiting <br />condition. <br />^ Regional growth is increasing traffic volumes and the demand for an improved <br />road network, which is having an impact on circulation in the study area. <br />MiAwaj~ FAruu~e Hra.
