These five sites, two located on Miami Church Road, Frank Liske <br />Park, Old Bell Mission Church and New Testament Baptist Church, are located on Figure <br />5, the Environmental Features Map. <br />f)peit Shrcce nrrrl Fvntternf.~treres <br />Other environmental features that define the area are <br />the open pastures and dense vegetation.. Community <br />members participating in the process expressed their <br />support for preserving the vegetation, water resources <br />and other natural features that contribute to the rural <br />character of the Central Area. Related to the protection <br />of critical environmental resources, the protection of <br />vegetation in the form of larger buffers along rivers, <br />creeks and streams was of primary interest. The <br />desire for protection was mostly in response to the <br />clear-cutting that is occurring in'the county. The <br />county has open space and preservation requirements,, <br />including a Waterbody buffer„as well as primary and secondary open space protection <br />(steep slopes, tree, floodplain, etc.). <br />2.6 7ransportaiiott <br />The study area is served by a network comprised of federal and state highways and local <br />roads (see Figure 7, Transportation Facilities). Traffic congestion exists on some <br />segments of roadways in the. Central Area, and traffic volumes are increasing-as the <br />population and the ntunber of h9useholds continue to rise. <br />Congested roadways: <br />• I-85 is approaching capacity <br />• NC 49 operates over capacity west: of US 601 and in the vicinity of Rocky River <br />Road; although NG 49 has been recently widened, other segments of NC 49 are <br />approaching capacity. [nahe 2030 Metrolina Regional Model, NC 49'is shown to <br />be highly congested between US 601 and Cotd Springs Road and between.
