CABARRUS COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
REGULAR MEETING
SEPTEMBER 22, 2008
6:30 P. M.
AGENDA CATEGORY:
Consent Agenda
SUBJECT:
Cooperative Extension -Budget Amendment (N.C. Agricultural Development
& Farmland Preservation Grant - $840,750)
BRIEF SUMMARY:
Cabarrus County has been awarded a grant from the N.C. Agricultural
Development & Farmland Preservation for the Sustainable Community
Initiative.
We are at an important juncture within our community toward a transition to a
food system driven by the desire for healthy, safe, high quality food and for
connections to the food source/production method of that food. This involves
stakeholders across the whole food chain.
Goals for this agricultural component of a Sustainable Community include:
increased business sales, increased individual farmer sales, improved farmer
profitability and operational efficiency, increased purchase of community-
based foods, increased jobs, leveraged additional funds, increased
consumption of fresh produce, etc.
The idea is that local food strengthens agriculture, connects consumers with
local producers' products, and allows producers to remain economically
viable.
This budget amendment totaling $840,750, appropriates the grant revenue of
$675,000, the county's cash contribution of $145,750 (which had been set
aside in Capital Reserve at the end of last fiscal year) and private contribution
of $20,000. Other County in-kind services total $33,500, for a total project
budget of $874,250.
Item# 5
