<br />Dama a Assessment -The conduct of "on the scene" surveys following any disaster to <br />.,~ g <br />determine the amount of loss or damage caused by the incident, Extent of damage is assessed <br />in all types of disasters such as flash flood, tornado, winter storm, hurricane, nuclear power <br />incident, and chemical,explosion. <br />Department of Crime Control & Public Safety (CCPS) -The North Carolina department <br />responsible for state crime control and disaster preparation and response. <br />Department of Homeland Security (DHS) - a Cabinet department of the fedexal <br />government of the United States that is concerned with protecting America's people from <br />harm and its infrastructure, public and private property from damage. This department <br />was created primarily from a conglomeration of existing federal agencies in response to <br />the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. DHS includes the Federal Emergency <br />Management Agency. <br />Disaster - An occurrence or imminent threat of widespread or severe damage, injury, or <br />loss of life or property resulting from any natural, man-made, military or paramilitary <br />cause. <br />Disaster/Emergeney -Any natural or man-made event which causes sufficient damage to <br />life and property. Disaster and emergency are used interchangeably whenever a situation <br />calls for a crisis response, however emergencies can be handled with resoluces routinely <br />available to the community. A disaster calls for a response that exceeds local capabilities. <br />Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT} - A group of medical and support <br />personnel designed to provide emergency medical care during a disaster or other unusual <br />event. {formerly called the Special Operations Response Team} <br />Disaster Mortuary Team (DMORT) -Federal level response team designed to provide <br />mortuary assistance in the case of a mass fatality incident or cemetery related incident. <br />The DMORT works under local jurisdictional authorities such as Coroner/Medical <br />Examiners, Law Enforcement and Emergency Managers. <br />Distribution Centers -Facilities operated by local governments, local churches, <br />community based organizations, and voluntary agencies for providing donated goods <br />directly to disaster victims. <br />Division of Emergency Management (EM} -The North Carolina state agency tasked with <br />protecting the general public from the effects of natural or marunade disasters. <br />Donations Coordination Center - An area designated for the coordination of goods, <br />services and volunteers. The State Donations Coordinator, the State Volunteer <br />Coordinator, FEMA Donations/Volunteer Coordinator and representatives of <br />l participating Volunteer Agencies will operate from this center. <br />EOP/GLOSSARY 3 September 2008 <br />F-2 264 of 408 <br />
