Paralegal <br />GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br />Performs difficult skilled clerical work providing office assistance to the Legal Department; does related <br />work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Senior Attorney and Attorney. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS: <br />Providing office assistance to Legal Department; conducting legal research; compiling <br />information; preparing and Tiling legal instruments; preparing and maintaining records and files. <br />(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of <br />specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical <br />assignment to the position.) <br />Serves as office receptionist; answers telephone and greets visitors. <br />Composes and types correspondence for Legal Department. <br />Maintains legal files. <br />Takes and transcribes dictation and prepares a variety of legal documents, where a knowledge of <br />format and presentation is necessary. <br />Requisitions supplies; processes bills for payment and maintains records of same. <br />Performs legal research and other searches. <br />Prepares attorney for litigation. <br />Performs related tasks as required. <br />KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br />Thorough knowledge of legal office practices, procedures and techniques; thorough knowledge of legal <br />terminology and spelling; thorough knowledge of department functions, organization and policies; <br />thorough knowledge of the methods and practices utilized in legal research; general knowledge of <br />applicable laws; ability to maintain complex office and legal records; ability to organize and perform <br />work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, <br />court officials and the general public. <br />EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br />Graduation from an appropriately accredited school for paralegal training and one year direct experience. <br />A combination of higher level education in paralegal technology or a related azea and substantive <br />paralegal experience or extensive office work experience maybe considered. <br />PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: <br />This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible <br />amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, fingering, <br />and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of <br />the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity <br />is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and <br />thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to <br />adverse environmental conditions. <br />SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: <br />Possession of or acquisition within one year of certification as a paralegal.
