Graying of the baby boomers <br /> <br />The primary cause of the aging of our population is the decrease in the number <br />of children families are having, although this may seem surprising. Fewer <br />children automatically means that older adults are a larger percentage of the <br />population. <br /> <br />As we have already seen, our state is one of the more popular retirement states. <br />As of 1990, we ranked third in terms of retirees moving into the state. About <br />28,000 persons age 65 and above entered our state in 1990. <br /> <br />Until 1998, the baby boomers made up the largest generation of children ever <br />born in the U.S. Even if their life expectancy had not increased, they would <br />still become the largest group of older adults ever. <br /> <br />7 <br /> <br />(J-2 <br />
