Memo

To:

Board of Commissioners

From:

Mike Downs
Deputy County Manager

CC:

John Day
County Manager

Date:

January 30, 2006

Subject:

Non-Emergency Transportation

The current ambulance that is being used for our Non-Emergency Transport Program is
11 years old and has run approximately 174,000 miles. This unit has become very hard
to depend on because of the frequency of maintenance and repairs needed to keep it on
the road. The complexity and the cost ofthese items seem to increase as the unit ages as
well. Therefore the EMS staff is requesting to purchase a new "remount" ambulance to
replace this unit. Due to the sale of surplus transportation vans there is $31,750.00
available to put towards the $55,000.00 needed to purchase the new unit. With the
approval of the attached proposed budget amendment of $23,250.00, a remounted
ambulance can be purchased and put into service as soon as possible.

In an effort to ensure that Cabarrus County continues to provide the very best in non-
emergency care and that our employees have the best equipment possible to perform their
jobs, I recommend that the attached budget amendment is approved and the staff is
directed to purchase the new "remounted" ambulance.

[-8
