Most of the complaints I receive deal with allegations by
home owners that the building inspector "missed" building code violations. The
response to the allegations that I most often get from the inspector is on the order of
"Yes, I missed the violations, but there is just so much time in the day and we are just so
rushed and I really do try to catch eVf;rything..." These complaints often end up in court
with the jurisdiction of the inspector being sued because in missing building code
violations the complainant feels the safety of the public was not being protected. These
are good inspectors and they and thl~ir jurisdictions are getting in trouble because the
inspections are being h\lrried. An understaffed inspection department just does got pay.

We are now seeing an increase of problems, complaints and litigations coming from all
regions because of the increase in construction due to the influx of out-of-state people,
the complexity of the structures being built and the construction difficulties associated
with the location of the structures. The workload for the inspectors is rapidly increasing
and often the jurisdictions are just not responding to the additional staff requirements of
the inspection departments quickly enough.

I hope I have been some help with your question. Please do not hesitate to call if I can
be of further assistance.

---

anne or
nsultant & Certification Engineer

F-\'3
