JAN 1 0 2005

January 4, 2005

John D. Day
County Manager
Cabarrus County
P.O. Box 707
Concord, North Carolina 28026-0707

Dear Mr. Day:

Regarding the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge, I wish to formally request that
Cabarrus County consider a contribution of $20,000 to help fund the many events which
are planned to maximize the positive impact of the All-Star Challenge and to ensure that
it never, ever leaves Lowe's Motor Speedway and Cabarrus County. As you know, the
recent study conducted by Dr. John Connaughton and his colleagues at the University of
North Carolina Charlotte showed the total economic impact of the NASCAR NEXTEL
All-Star Challenge in Cabarrus, Iredell and Mecklenburg counties in 2004 was estimated
at $94 million and also supported an estimated total of 1,212 jobs in these counties.
Obviously, the economic benefits of the All-Star race to Cabarrus County are huge.
Moreover, if we want to establish our region as the "Center of Motorsports" or
"NASCAR Valley," our retaining the All-Star Race in Cabarrus County is of major
importance.

As of now, the following organizations have pledged a contribution: The Charlotte
Chamber, Cabarrus Regional Chamber and EDC, Cabarrus CVB, Mooresville CVB, and
the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. In addition, each of the cities, counties, and
other organizations that are members of the Local. Organizing Committee are being asked
to contribute. The Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, a 501(c) (3) organization
(Federal ID #56-1877782), is handling the funds from their office. They have a system of
checks and balances in place to avoid any misuse or misappropriation of funds.

Because of the genuine and sincere united efforts already underway by a dedicated and
commited group of individuals, we are confident that we will garner the financial support
we need so that the All-Star Challenge will remain here in Cabarrus County and the
Charlotte region. Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

~A:tLuw1-

Ann Sternal

0.- 3

3003 DalE' Earnhardt Blvd · SuitE' 200 · Kannapolis.
