<br />CABARRUSCOUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> <br />PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />NORTH CAROLINA <br /> <br />WHEREAS, mental retardation is a condition which affects more than seven million <br />Americans and their families; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, public awareness and education enhance a cornmunity's understanding of <br />the issues affecting people with mental retardation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, people with mental retardation can be vital and vibrant members of our <br />cornmunities, improving the quality oflife for all of us; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the month of March has been designated National Mental Retardation <br />Awareness Month, with 100,000 members and 900 chapters of The Arc undertaking public <br />awareness, educational, and fundraising initiatives; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, The Arc of the United States is the nation's leading volunteer-based <br />organization advocating for and with people with mental retardation and related developmental <br />disabilities and their families; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, The Arc of Cabarrus County has served the citizens of our area for over <br />fifty years, providing advocacy, education, support, and social activities for persons with mental <br />retardation and other developmental disabilities throughout Cabarrus County. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Cornmissioners does hereby <br />proclaim March 2005 as <br /> <br />MENTAL RETARDATION AWARENESS MONTH <br /> <br />in Cabarrus County and urge the citizens of this county to give full support of efforts toward <br />enabling people with mental retardation to live full and productive lives of inclusion in our <br />cornmunities. <br /> <br />This the 21 sl day of March 2005. <br /> <br />Carolyn B.
