9

6. Stron!!est Elements: Jobs and Competition.

A number of statements about economic incentives score over 70%
agreement with five of these gaining close to or over 50% "strong
agreement." The strongest relate to:

. Steady iobs are created (86% agree, 45% strongly agree);

. Other countries/states offer incentives; North Carolina must
too to stay competitive (84% agree, 52% strongly agree);

. Incentives help make North Carolina's economy strong
(78% agree, 37% strongly agree);

. Competing states like Alabama, South Carolina and Virginia
offer deals, so too should North Carolina (78% agree, 48%
strongly agree);

. Taxpayers are protected since tax credits are performance-
based (70% agree, 47% strongly agree); and

. North Carolina must keep its word and follow through on
incentives offered or risk killing future iob growth
opportunities (77% agree, 46% strongly agree).
Solid two-thirds majorities also agree that incentives packages for
companies relocating to one area - like the Triad - benefit the whole
state and that a lawsuit threatening to stop incentives risks driving
new jobs to competing states.
The sentiment about a Triad-based incentive deal benefiting the entire
state is agreed to by 71 % in Charlotte, 69% in Raleigh, 88% in
Asheville, and 63% in Greenville.

FrederickPolls

G--I

August 2005
