Page 2

Linda Grist, Our Elections Director, has spent a great deal of time working on meeting the deadlines and
requirements of each election along with the staff. This does not allow for any planning time and staff
development and training. There are numerous duties required by law to be performed, such as;
Absentee voting, campaign reporting, Federal/Statellocal reporting, audits and tracking,
documenting/implementing ne.,y procedures for new laws ratified by the State legislators, training
precinct officials/public on the l1ew equipment, new laws and policies, registration, file maintenance
upkeep and special duplicate list, felon list, DMV list to be processed, special Seims and computer
application projects, web-site updates, investigation of equipment, moving or creating new precincts as
needed and notifying all voters of the changes, ADA accessibility requirements and yearly inspections
of all 43 precincts, new subdivisions input, grant applications,. petitions, brochures, newsletters,
precinct official requirements, precinct official manuals, Statistical reports, regular and special elections
( we held 5 elections in 200412~05 fiscal year) public interaction and phone call and this just names a
few of the responsibilities that 4'staffmembers are required to perform on a daily basis.

Auditing is essential in our process due to the enormous responsibility we feel toward the public, the
candidates and the county in conducting an election that is successful. Additionally, staff is not able to
take the needed time off without increasing the workload of other employees within the office and we
can see that burnout is a potential reality.

To summarize, some of the mil1)dated time sensitive duties are beginning during the same time frame.
Our voting population is constaj1t1y growing. With the increase in work due to new equipment and the
new laws passed in August and ~olicies by the State Board and the formulation of policies in the office,
it will be very hard to have a slife/secure election without problems occurring. We respectfully. request
the addition of a Senior Elections Clerk so that the department can move forward during this critical
conversion and ever increasing population. We have enjoyed a successful election history and would
like to continue this into the future.

~ 4J~?oIor-

R.
