<br />Whereas, the North Carolina Research Campus, built upon the same land as <br />Cannon Mills, and the citY's efforts to attract additional industry will attract <br />workers from many placea, support housing, employment, education and an <br />improved quality of life in Kannapolis; and <br /> <br />Whereas, during the great depression of the 1930s, Charles A. Cannon kept the <br />doors of his plants open tb provide work for his employees even though few new <br />orders were being receiv~d and he was instrumental in persuading New York <br />bankers to renew the shoft-term obligations of the State of North Carolina, thus <br />preventing a disastrous d~fault by the State; and <br /> <br />Whereas, Charles A. Caqnon created one new job for each day during the half- <br />century he provided lead~rship for the Cannon mills and vigorously resisted all <br />legislation which adversely affected the textile industry; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the North Carqlina Research Campus, in partnership with Dole Foods <br />and the University ofNQrth Carolina, will createjobs for skilled workers and <br />contribute through reseatch to the local, regional, state and global economy; and <br /> <br />Whereas, J.W. Cannon,.Charles A. Cannon, who assumed leadership of the mill <br />after the death of his father in 1921, and the Cannon family, expanded the mill, <br />erected churches, built Cannon Memorial Hospital, now Northeast Medical Center, <br />started musical educatiop in the schools, worked to preserve and promote the arts, <br />history and cultural affairs, and renovated the buildings of downtown Kannapolis <br />in a Colonial Williamsbprg style; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the North Carplina Research Campus will stimulate advanced education, <br />culture and revitalize mlU1Y areas of Kannapolis; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the people of [Kannapolis are widely-known for their strong work ethic, <br />civic pride, competitiv~, sports teams, contributions to the birth and development of <br />stockcar racing and the imotorsports industry, bands and musical groups, <br />community and patrioti~ spirit, faith, their service in every armed conflict during <br />the city's history, and t~eir bravery in serving their country with valor and <br />distinction; and <br /> <br />c.-'~ <br />
