David is currently working on a major community beautification project involving the restoration of a
historic community cemetery. The Old Campground Cemetery is a 16-acre tract in a highly visible site
abandoned before 1948. David recruited volunteers from the Master Gardeners, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Histroic
Concord and Concord city. He also recruited community service workers. He supervised up to 70 people with up
to 15 chains saws on 7 different workdays. Volunteers cleared over 70 dumptmcks loads of brush, and removed 60
cubic yards of trash. He has written two mini grants which provided enough herbicide to treat 4 acres of kudzu.
While some restoration remains to be done, this community beautification project has improved a historical
resource.

David's efforts to maintain professional excellence include numerous formal and informal opportunities.
While maintaining full time employment, he has taken 37 credit hours of post graduate work. Courses included
Physiology of Landscape Plants, Programming, Special Problems in Entomology, Pant Disease, Principles,
Diagnosis and Management, Special topic Plant Pathology, Special Topics in Horticulture, Plant Taxonomy.
Organic and Sustainable Vegetable Production, Research Principles, and Ethics in Agriculture. This culminated in
earning a Master of Horticulture degree with a 3.95 average from 1996 to 1998. He became a certified plantsman
in 1996.

After beginning his extension career with no computer skills, David has taken numerous short computer
classes. These classes have been offered by Cooperative Extension, Rowan Community College and Cabarrus

County. As a result, David is proficient at word processing and powerpoint. He is the webmaster for the county
webpages and shares responsibility for county systems administrator.

David has attended every state meeting for the last eight tears. He attended the National meeting in
Charlotte NC, Casper WY, and Albuquerque NM. He has twice served as District Secretary for the Southwest
District Agriculture Agents association.
