Brown Auditorium and the renovation of the gym, classrooms, and lockers at
Kannapolis Middle School be included in the 2004 bank qualified loan financing.
We feel these projects are of great importance and need to be completed this
year. Almost all use of the auditorium has been lost, and the Middle School
needs to be renovated before it becomes an intermediate school. Both
renovations could be completed at a cost of $815,000.

The auditorium at A.L. Brown was constructed in 1950 and was state of
the art in its day. No major renovations have occurred to this facility since its
construction and the years of use by the community and school have taken their
toll. The auditorium is used each year by not only the school, but also other
groups including The Cabarrus Ads Council, Cabarrus Law Enforcement,
Cabarrus Vocal Ensemble, Piedmont Prime Time Community Band and various
churches and dance studios. Safety has become a major issue since the rigging
system that holds the curtain and light bars had to be secured causing the lines
sets to be inoperable. The lighting itself is also a concern due to the fact that
much of it is original and outdated. The various stage curtains are also well past
their useful life. While safety is the major concern, the auditorium has also lost
its ability to be functional. The sound system has completely failed and the
original seating is a maintenance issue.

The gym at the Kannapolis Middle School is in dire need of repair. The
floor is in desperate need of replacement as it is cracking and wearing out.
Presently the gym has a rubberized floor that needs to be replaced with a wood
floor. The bleachers are also in poor shape. They were donated from UNCC
over a decade ago and are becoming difficult to maintain. The gym needs a total
overhaul in order to be a functional instructional space. The classroom floor
coverings at the middle school are original to the building and are in dire need of
