COMPONENT SUMMARY (attach for each component) <br /> <br />Statement of the Problem <br />in concise terminology, describe the ]uven~le just~ce problem(s) the program intends to address and how these <br />services meet the needs identified in the JCPC Annual Plan. <br /> <br />Juveniles can only discern the impact of the damages or injury caused by their offenses if they have had the <br />opportunity to provide restoration to the wct]m or community through their own effort ProJect Challenge provides <br />th~s opportunity New legislation has caused both an increase in juvenile petitions and a need to address those <br />petitions differently, according to the level of offense. Project Challenge meets the growing need for deferral <br />agreements, as well as the need for diversion contracts, and Level I and II dispositions. <br /> <br />Priority Risk Factor(s) Addressed <br /> <br />State how the program w/Ii address the priority risk factor(s) ~dentified by the JCPC. <br />Project Challenge (PC) addresses the identified risk factors of Cabarrus County by offenng pm-social role <br />models, by giving some community service credit for tutodng to participants who are struggling academiclly. <br />Participation in PC increases youth's self-esteem and insblls a sense of giving of self to others. PC aspires to <br />decrease family conflict, disruption and management problems by teaching youth specific social skills. These skills <br />are following instructions, accepting correc~on, asking permission and getting along with peers. PC also <br />addresses the. impoverished states of neig.hborhoods and commun~Jes. <br /> <br />Program Goals <br /> <br />State the effect that the'program is designed to have on solving the 'problem described above. <br />The goal of the program is to provide the Juvenile Court System and the Department of Juvemle Justice w~th a <br />disposifional structure for restitution and rehabilitation in delinquent and undisciplined cases, as well as a suitable <br />plan for deferral agreements. Project Challenge, wh~le a service to the court, will also be providing parbcipants <br />and local communities a program that increases self-esteem and civic awareness. Project Challenge facilitates <br />mindfulness ~n participants that they can make a posrtive difference in their homes. <br /> <br />Targ,et Populat, ion <br /> <br />Describe the target population and the steps that the program has taken to insure that the target population is <br />Project Challenge has identified juveniles between the ages of 10 and 17 years of age that have been referred by <br />the juvenile court system or the Juvenile Court Counselors as its target population. <br /> <br />Measurable Objective(s) <br />State in measurable terms the intended effect of the program on specific undisciplined and/or delinquent <br />65% of youth served w~ll have no new court referrals. <br /> <br />By post test at termination, 65% of youth served will demonstrate the following social sk~lls: following instructions, <br />accepting correction, asking permission and getting along with peers. <br /> <br />Information Maintained for Effectiveness Measurement <br />Ust the data elements and records the program will maintain to document effectiveness. ' <br />Project Challenge maintains participant files, client-tracl~ng forms, and community service and restitution <br />records, as well as school and court related information to assure compliance with stated obiect]ves. Project <br />Cha;;enge also maintains rec~diwsm records to track the progress of participants after comp;etlon of the program. <br /> <br /> <br />
