<br /> <br />Cabarrus County Public Library <br />27 Union St. , North, Concord, NC 28025 <br /> <br />"Food for (Library) Fines" <br /> <br />In December, 2003, the Library Department held its first "Food for Fines" event. The <br />event was very successful in that it received over 2000 food items that were distributed to <br />those in need through the Cabarrus Christian Ministry, a local non-profit organization. It <br />also allowed patrons with outstanding fines to "pay up" while supporting the nutritional <br />needs of those in need. <br /> <br />The Library wishes to repeat this event in 2004 during the two weeks beginning n <br />Saturday, November 27 and concluding on Saturday, December 11. <br /> <br />During this event, the four branches of the Cabarrus County Public Library and the <br />Cabarrus County Bookmobile will collect food items instead of monetary fines for <br />overdue library materials. The food items collected will be given to local charitable <br />organizations for distribution to those in need. <br /> <br />This event will accomplish the following: <br /> <br />Clear outstanding fines: Library customers will be allowed to payoff overdue fines and <br />clear their records. <br /> <br />Recover "lost" materials: Library patrons who have not returned items will be allowed to <br />do so by returning these items and paying the "maximum overdue fine per item" with <br />food items. <br /> <br />Provide food items to those in need in a season of sharing. In addition to those customers <br />who pay fines with food items, it is also likely that some Library customers without fines <br />may also be motivated to participate by donating food items. <br /> <br />This project will be accomplished without cost to the County and will generate favorable <br />publicity for the Library and Cabarrus County. <br /> <br />This proposal will be placed on the agenda for the regular September, 2004 meeting of <br />the Board of County Commissioners. <br /> <br />Cabarrus County Public Library, 27 Union 51.
