<br />CABARRUSC([)UNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> <br />PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Brain injury is a serious, national public health epidemic affecting at least <br />5.3 million Americans; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Every 21 seconds, someone in the United States will.sustain a traumatic <br />brain injury (TBI), which equals more than 4,000 people daily; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Each year, at least 50,000 Americans die and 90,000 Americans experience <br />the onset of life-long disabilities as a result of sustaining a brain injury; and <br /> <br />,I <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Each year in North Carolina over 36,000 people are seen in the emergency <br />departments for TBI; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Prevention is the only known cure; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, The mission of the Brain Injury Association of America is to create a better <br />future through brain injury prevention, research, education and advocacy; and <br /> <br />WHEREi\S, _The Brain Injury Association of American and the Concord Area Brain <br />Injury and Spinal Cord Injury Support Network strive to increase awareness and <br />understanding of brain injuries and to decrease the number of brain injuries. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners does hereby proclaim October 2004, "Brain Injury Awareness Month" in <br />Cabarrus County and call upon all government agencies, health organizations, <br />communications media and citizens of Cabarrus County to observe this month with <br />appropriate recognition whereof. <br /> <br />Adopted this 20th day of September, 2004. <br /> <br />Robert M.
