Memo

To:

From:

Ge:

Date:

Re:

Board of Commissioners

Jonathan Marshall, Planning Services

John Day, Susie Bonds, and Fletcher Hartsell

02/17/O3

Road Naming

This memorandum is in response to a question about how the Board could propose a name for a
section of the State highway system. There are two ways to approach this, and I will detail both.

The first method is to recommend a memorial or honorary name. To do this, the Board of
Commissioners and the Council for any affected town would need to pass a resolution recommending
the name and section of highway affected. This resolution would be sent to Benton Payne with the
Division of Highways in Albemarle. The recommendation would then be placed on the calendar of the
State Board of Transportation for their review and approval.

The second method is to actually rs-name that section of highway which would require that residents
and businesses be re-addressed. The process detailed above should still be followed, and in addition,
the Board of Commissioners would need to follow the statutory road rs-naming process. This would
include a public hearing so that those affected could address the change.

If you wish to pursue either of these options please let me know the name you ars recommending and
the section of highway. My staff can then prepare a resolution, let you know if any of the municipalities
ars affected, and also provide an estimate of the number of parcels affected should you wish to pursue
the naming that also requires re-addressing.

· Page 1 I~"., I rO
