2003-04 Availability Grant

Need Statement

Concern for the need of quality school-age care in Cabarrus County is essential,
especially during afterschool hours. Parents are looking for centers that are open for
before school as well as afterschool ho~s. Families at Logan Community Day Care will
provide care from 6:30 a.m. until 8:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. weekdays.
Adding care in such a diverse area is essential for keeping children in a safe, nurturing
environment during afterschool hours.

This day care center is in a very populated, low-income neighborhood. The
center is made of 95% African-American children and 5% Hispanic. The center has a
continuous waiting list for afterschool care. Because of this need, a new center was built
to accommodate the growing need in quality care. Every day care center in the area
already has a waiting list for afterschool care. Opening another afterschool center in this
area is crucial for the wellbeing of children. The new afterschool center is in need of
educational supplies, age appropriat~ furnishings, curriculum resources and stafftraining

in order to become a quality licensed afterschool center. Logan is well known for their
quality care. In their curr/ent child care program, they are a five-star center. They strive
to keep a quality center and provide the most for their children. In most cases, this is the
only place that they will receive homework help as well as a nutritious snack/meal.

Objectives

Receive a temporary license from the Division of Child Development no later than
June 30, 2004.

3
