Page 2

across the state. We are asking that you present the resolution to your board for adoption,
and once completed, return a copy of the signed resolution to me. We would like to
receive the signed resolutions by December 15, 2003. Once collected, all of the
resolutions will be presented to our legislators.

Since 1999, our committee has secured and delivered to NCDOT and our area legislators
resolutions of support from all of our Western communities. W~ organized and continue
to hold a monthly and bi-monthly update meeting alternating in each of our towns. We
also organized a major rally of over three hundred attendees with the legislative sub-
committee at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, hosted a legislative reception, and we
continue wot 'king with DOT on projects at each of the nine Western Service stops. Now
we must take the next step and demonstrate to the entire General Assembly the need and
support for a statewide rail initiative, and a North Carolina rail system encompassing the
needs of our state for passenger rail and freight service.

This is not just a local issue, or a regional issue, it is a ~tate issue. We appreciate your
support and look forward to the return of passenger rail service to our communities. Rail
service will enhance our communities, and will promote growth, economic development
and a safer, cleaner place to live and work. Please do not hesitate to give me a call at
(828) 669-3720 or send e-mail to icalvert@TycoVaives.com if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Judith Calvert Ray
Chair, WNC Rail Corridor Committee

JCR:sl

Attachment: Resolution
