CABARRUS COUNTY North Carolina PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on behalf of the citizens of Cabarms County, we are pleased to join the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association in celebrating May 2002 as American Stroke Month in Cabarms County; and WHEREAS, acknowledging May 2002 offers advocates for stroke awareness an opportunity to educate the public and policy makers about the devastating effects of strokes; and WHEREAS, strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States striking over 6000,000 Americans each year; and WHEREAS, strokes are a leading cause of serious long-term disabilities with about 4.5 million stroke survivors today; and WHEREAS, the majority of Americans are not aware of their risk factors for a stroke, nor are they aware of the signs and symptoms of an impending stroke; and WHEREAS, symptoms of stroke include: sudden numbness or weakness of the face, ann or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and sudden severe headache with no know cause; and WHEREAS, stroke leads to the death and disability of more than 29,000 citizens of North Carolina each year; and WHEREAS, new and effective treatments have been developed to treat and minimize the severity and damaging effects of strokes, but much more research is needed; WHEREAS, we urge all the citizens of our County to familiarize themselves with the signs, symptoms, and risk factors associated with strokes so that we might begin to reduce the devastating effects that a stroke makes on our population. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Cabarms County Board of Commissioners, hereby proclaim the month of May 2002 as AMERICAN STROKE MONTH IN CABARRUS COUNTY Robert M.
