CABARRUS COUNTY <br /> North Carolina <br /> <br />PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on behalf of the citizens of Cabarms County, we are pleased to join the American <br />Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association in celebrating May 2002 as <br />American Stroke Month in Cabarms County; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, acknowledging May 2002 offers advocates for stroke awareness an opportunity to <br />educate the public and policy makers about the devastating effects of strokes; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States striking over <br />6000,000 Americans each year; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, strokes are a leading cause of serious long-term disabilities with about 4.5 million <br />stroke survivors today; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the majority of Americans are not aware of their risk factors for a stroke, nor are <br />they aware of the signs and symptoms of an impending stroke; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, symptoms of stroke include: sudden numbness or weakness of the face, ann or <br />leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; <br />sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or <br />coordination; and sudden severe headache with no know cause; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, stroke leads to the death and disability of more than 29,000 citizens of North <br />Carolina each year; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, new and effective treatments have been developed to treat and minimize the <br />severity and damaging effects of strokes, but much more research is needed; <br /> <br />WHEREAS, we urge all the citizens of our County to familiarize themselves with the signs, <br />symptoms, and risk factors associated with strokes so that we might begin to reduce the <br />devastating effects that a stroke makes on our population. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the Cabarms County Board of <br />Commissioners, hereby proclaim the month of May 2002 as <br /> <br />AMERICAN STROKE MONTH IN CABARRUS COUNTY <br /> <br />Robert M.
