Cabarms County Public Library
27 Union St. North, Concord NC 28025
Tel. 704-920-2050 Fax 704-784-3822

Memorandum

Date:
To:
From:
Subject:

May 30, 2002
Blair Bennett, Finance Director
Tom Dillard, Library Director
Hinson Trust.

This refers to a matter that I believe I mentioned to you some time ago.

Mr. Non-is Dearmon, a member of the Kannapolis Historical Associates, has
advised me that a trust to support local schools and libraries was established by the late
Foy and Gertude Hinson, residents of Kannapolis. Under the terms of that trust and with
the assistance of the Kannapolis Historical Associates, the Kannapolis Library may apply
for and receive grant funds from this trust. Mr. Dearmon informs me that it is his
understanding that funds from these grants may be used for the purchase of equipment
and the acquisition of Library materials. Funds cannot, however, be used to cover
personnel costs.
The Kannapolis Historical Associates have requested that the Local History Room
in the Kannapolis Library be named in honor of Foy and Gertrude Hinson. Mr. Dearmon
expressed to me that Mr. and Mrs. Hinson were strong supporters of public library
service in the Kannapolis area. I did not know Mr. Hinson but recall that Mrs. Hinson
was a very enthusiastic and reliable volunteer at the Kannapolis Library for many years.
I also recall that she provided funding for the purchase of furniture for the Library.
Mr. Dearmon advises me that he has spoken to County Commissioner Privette
about this request and stated that Commissioner Privette was in favor of this request and
would support it should it be approved for consideration.
In that Mr. and Mrs. Hinson were strong library supporters and in that the naming
of the local history room in their memory would likely facilitate the awarding of funds
from their trust to the library, I also support this request. There are certainly equipment
and material needs that such funding would help acquire.
Mr. Dearmon requests that this request be placed before the County
Commissioners as soon as is possible relative to the grant review schedule of the Hinson
Trust. Is it possible to put it on the June 17, 2002 agenda? Mr. Dearmon and other
members of the Kannapolis History Associates wish to appear before the commission in
support of this request.
Please advise me regarding this matter at your convenience.
