Since July 1999 our local CCPT has carried out the following important activities on
children's behalf:
)~ 20 cases have been reviewed with social workers during regularly scheduled
meetings during ten CCPT meetings between July 1, 1999 and December 30,
2000.
} The team organized and carried out two Children's Vigils in October 1998 and
April 2000 to honor the memory of children Who died as a result of child abuse in
North Carolina. The vigils were held at 1st Presbyterian in Concord and 1st
Methodist in Concord. Both were highly publicized regionally and many local
citizens participated.
} Information about child protection and foster care was available at various
children's conferences and events, including the annual Coming Together for
Children Conference and the Coming Together for Chitdren Health and Safety
Fair in 1999 and 2000.
~' The team carded out a child fatality review in May, mandated by the state but led
by the team, after the death ora 2 month old infant in Cabarrus, and prepared the
required report to submit to the NC Division of Social Services.
> The team organized a community meeting in August to present the report and led
discussion of community steps to protect children and reduce mistreatment of
children.
~, The team applied for a grant from the NC Division of Social Services to organize
an Infant Safety Campaign and received $35,000 in August.
~' Members of the planning team, along with other community partners, are now
preparing the campaign, which will begin in February and last for several months.
It will target all parents and caregivers of newborns and infants with critical
information and guidance in six major areas. Behaviors that can result in death or
serious injury to infants are the targets that will be emphasized.

In summary, the Cabarms Community Child Protection Team continues to carry out the
mission required by state law. We thauk the commissioners for their support of the work
being done by social workers in the Children's Protective Services Unit at the
Department of Social Services through their budgeting activities and allocation of county
funds. We also thank Mr. Fennel for his support of the grant for the Infant Safety
Campaign, the application for which he approved and signed in June, and which we
subsequently received for the project which the state believes is an important one.

Respectfully submitted,
Anne Zaukaitis, Chairman
Cabarrus Community Child Protection Team
January 10, 2001
